Today, I'm the featured writer in Joan Dempsey's Gutsy Great Novelist Writers Studio. Here's my response to the question: When did you first realize you wanted to write a novel? Was there a particular person or experience that inspired you?

My younger sisters' bedroom adjoined mine, with nightly consequences. I invented a communication code and taped it to the back walls of our side-by side closets. Long after we were supposed to be asleep, I'd go into the closet and communicate with them through a series of special knocks. Taking two flashlights, I crawled into the dark hallway and shone lights on the back wall of their bedroom. The wild, invented stories began. Often, they were inspired by a children's novel I'd just read. It was important to keep this a secret from our parents, who'd ruin all the fun if they knew!

Knock, knock. Time for a story.

Here's where I am at the crack of dawn, every morning. From my kayak I have the unique opportunity to spend solitary time with nature.  The human inhabitants of my community are all still sleeping, and I'm thankful! My Loon family neighbours greet me - sometimes shyly ducking under the water and disappearing, and other times swimming very close by. The male and female call to each other- a gently hooting when they are joining me from a distance. Up close, they chattering and cry in a haunting duet that echoes from the distant trees.

When I am close to them I let the boat drift. I'm blessed that they accept my presence and let me listen to their early morning serenade. No other creature or instrument on earth can match the magic of their duet.

Rocks, trees and water.  Perfection.

The water flows in from snow melts to the north and runs through rivers and rapids until it meets Lake Rosseau.  Once this location was home to a logging mill.  The river would have been jammed with felled trees.  Finally all the trees were stripped away from the land.  Now many years later, we see nature has renewed herself.
Pristine perfection. Can you hear the water call?

Sometimes it does seem overwhelming.  Life can be difficult, full of disappointments, pain and suffering.

There is nothing more uplifting than seeing a baby's joy at a new discovery. In the book, Peter Pan, it says that fairies are born when a baby first laughs.  My little sweetie in this picture has spread many happiness fairies... there are invisible sushi fairies surrounding her right now.  Do you see them?

This is the historic Laura Secord Homestead in the quaint little village of Queenston Heights Ontario.  The building hasn't changed much since 1813 when she made her perilous 19 mile journey through the wilderness to warm Lieutenant FitzGibbons about an impending attack by American forces.  She was aided by Iroquois warriors who encountered her and escorted her to the British army.  Today it is a quiet place of contemplation.  The Battle of Beaver Dams was victorious for the British and Canadian forces, thanks to her heroic actions and early warning.

We've waited for months for Spring to arrive, and now it's here.  The shortest of all the Canadian seasons and the most anticipated.  Things are greening up and the white blossoms of the magnolias are popping.  Here's a pop of white on green in Costa Rica.  Another sign of anticipation.
